If Costa Rica is surf royalty, then the southern Osa Peninsula is its crown jewel: Miles of uncrowded beaches – a stark contrast to the surf throngs throughout much of Costa Rica – pave a sandy path to incredible surf breaks, barrels, and rolls suitable for anyone from spanking-new beginners to skilled surfers. Here’s what’s in store:
PLAYA PAN DULCE: With mellow right breaks and long swells that build into perfect tubes, Pan Dulce Beach is our area’s top choice for surf newbies and confident beginners.
BACKWASH: Slow and steady, Backwash Bay delivers an extensive (and rocky) reef that draws longboarders seeking lengthy rides.
CABO MATAPALO: Also known as Playa Matapalo, this surf destination is located right on the peninsula’s point – at the convergency of western and southwestern swells – and delivers the Big Daddy waves to prove it. Matapalo’s powerful right-point break and barrels deliver an excellent ride for intermediate and advanced surfers.
PAVONES (Half-Day Tour): Advanced surfers, take a half-day and pay your respects to the longest left in the world: Playa Pavones, a remote beach with such challenging surf, you’ll be joined only by the most die-hard barrel-hunters in the world.
